Narayana Nethralaya was started in the year 1982 as an eye clinic at Srirampuram, Bangalore. Recognizing the need to provide comprehensive eye care to the ever growing number of patients, while at the same time offering the best in ophthalmic sub-specialty services, Dr.K.Bhujang Shetty established this hospital to provide total eye care under one roof. This super specialty eye hospital in Bangalore is having three large centers, first center located centrally at Rajajinagar, second center at Narayana Health City campus on Hosur Road and the third new center located at Castle Street, Ashok Nagar, Bangalore. It is currently one of the largest tertiary eye care centers in the state of Karnataka providing an advanced level of eye care. We have now expanded to become even bigger and better. Our new eye hospital at Narayana Health City has separate wings for various specialties and departments, which are fully equipped with state of art diagnostic and therapeutic tools. This hospital proudly lodges a dedicated area for community eye care. This area exclusively caters to the eye care needs of the financially under-privileged, offering them quality eye care at no or subsidized cost, while at all times keeping the dignity of the individual in mind. Pediatric eye health is one of our areas of thrust. Our Institution is into community ophthalmology in a big way. Screening camps are conducted in various far flung areas and selected subjects are operated for cataract at the base hospital. The DNB candidates are involved both in the screening and surgical procedures of these patients under the guidance of the camp organizer and the concerned consultant. The DNB candidates get to operate cataracts, first under the supervision of a consultant and later independently in the camp set up. The candidates are taught small incision cataract surgeries and various other techniques like the Blumenthal technique. Research expansion is one of our current priorities and we have a dedicated wing to facilitate this endeavor. We are probably one of the few eye centers in the state to have dedicated research facilities. Our focus is on applied research in areas such as Stem cells, Molecular techniques (Polymerase chain reaction), Genetics, Ocular Immunology and infectious diseases.
